The Great Construction Challenge – Tom Briggs – Ages 4-8

Ages 4-8 - and other family members to bounce ideas off!

Last year, Tom ran “The Great Building Game and Other Challenges” with some small groups, which went down really well: this year we’re going BIG and opening up a similar idea to a much larger audience: attendees will be challenged to build something using whatever they have to hand; this will be followed by some creative tasks aimed at kickstarting their imagination. Parents, carers and siblings (and possibly pets) should be prepared to get involved too!

Session Materials: Participants will need to bring something to build with. This could be anything at all, as long as you can imagine building something with it! Assorted boxes, tubes and other fun stuff from the recycling bin would work well (as long as it’s clean!) with glue or sticky tape and maybe some scissors (careful!); or you could bring along a box of Lego or some plasticine: whatever you can build with!

You will also need:

  • a dictionary (preferably a real, actual book rather than an electronic version)
  • some dice (one will do; online or app-based dice would work too but real ones are more fun)
  • the most BORING thing in your house.

Tom Briggs

Tom Briggs

Tom Briggs is a massive nerd who is very much in touch with his inner child. This means that his favourite subject is maths, and his favourite way to learn about anything (especially maths) is to play with it until it either breaks, does something weird, or shows him something about the world that he hadn’t realised before. Tom is an experienced maths teacher and freelancer in the world of museum learning who has delivered all sorts of sessions for Potential Plus UK and keeps coming back to do more because he loves it.
